Unit Standard: 9964 NQF Level 2, Credits 3

This course includes topics such as workplace health and safety legislation relating to health and safety representatives, employees and employers; requirements to conduct SHE representation activities at a workplace; addressing SHE related issues within the scope of authority of health and safety representatives and complying with activities within SHE structures.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Anyone willing to equip themselves with knowledge and the understanding of a health and safety program that includes hazard identification, risk assessment, and a health and safety plan in preparation for taking on duties of SHE REP.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The fundamental objective is to enable statutory requirements that include current national regulations applicable to most work places.  This includes acts and regulations, ordinances, by-laws, directives, standards, guidelines, and codes issued by a legislative body such as parliament, provincial administrations, local authorities, and other bodies.

Course modules consist of:

1. Identifying potential hazards – hazards to be removed, reduced, or reported.

2. Implications of exposure to hazardous substances and hazards.

3. Drawing up a health and safety plan.

4. Protective clothing requirements.

5. Statutory requirements.

6. Location of fire extinguishers, hoses, and alarms.

7. Identifying fire extinguishers type – and correct use.

8. Procedures for the identification of emergencies.

9. Reporting injuries involving individuals to the relevant persons.

10. Procedures for reporting and recording.

11. Procedures to be followed if an injury may lead to a claim against workman’s compensation.

12. Incident report – written and delivered to the relevant authority from the staff member/s and stored safely.
